Osun Rerun: Drama At Polling Units As Voters Defy Heavy Rainfall

There was mild drama at Polling Unit 17, Ward 5, Adewale Street, Alekuwodo, Osogbo, when voters that came out to participate in the Osun State governorship rerun election refused to quit the queue in spite of a heavy downpour. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the election process started at 8 a.m. on Thursday but at around 9:12 a.m., there was heavy downpour which halted the process. The sudden rainfall had everybody running for cover but voters already on the voting queue, who initially ran for cover, quickly returned when they noticed that others who refused to take cover had moved forward to replace them. By the time the rain subsided, all the voters on the queue were already drenched. The voting, however, continued at 9:30 a.m. when everyone (INEC staff, security, media men and others) had returned to their posts. World Bank Says Nigeria Will Soon Recover From Economic Recession

Mrs Eme Essien-Lore, Country Manager in Nigeria, International Finance Corporation, a member of the group, made the observation in an interview with journalsits in Lagos on Thursday. ”In our perspective and with the numbers that we have seen coming from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Nigeria’s economy has recorded about one per cent real growth. ”That is a bit lower than government’s expectation which is about 2.2 per cent growth for 2017. “It is a bit modest, but we certainly expect that the economy of Nigeria will rebound and recover from last year’s recession, ” she said.Essien-Lore commended Federal Government`s new economic plan, but said that there was need to set priorities for implementation of the plan by the year 2020.According to her, the plan is very comprehensive, ambitious and thoughtful.
